New Sidewalks, a Ramp, and a
Custom Solution for Apartment Complex

Here are some new, handicap-friendly sidewalks at an apartment complex. This job also entailed a custom design and solution for an existing building foundation issue. Over the years, trees and shrubs had grown massive root systems adjacent to the building. The roots infiltrated the gap between the foundation slab, and the CMU wall. The roots actually lifted the CMU wall from it's concrete base, as much as an inch in some spots. After excavation, and the clearing of roots and dirt from along the edge of the building, a custom concrete base was formed and poured along the building side, and on the existing footing. Steel rebar was pinned in two directions along the length of the building, to insure integrety over the long term. Concrete was poured, and filled the gap created by the roots. This insured a proper structural base, and sealed off a problem area of water infiltration. Other measures such as a trench drain were employed to address a water issue also. This custom base was given a decorative look, with three quarter inch champfa strip to bevel the edges. Sidewalks are five feet in width, have a high-grip mag/broom finish, and comply with Americans with disability act (ADA) requirements. All surfaces are very level, without any 'lips' at the transition points. Control joints are diamond cut with a strait edge, for a cleaner, straiter look and smoother ride for wheel chairs exc. Existing base material was replaced with suitable solid fill, and compacted prior to concrete. Sidewalks are no less than 4 inches thick in all areas. Wire mesh was used throughout, and rebar was also used in certain areas. Sidewalks were given a slight thickened edge.
